3 Quick Takes for KU Hoops after Puerto Rico

Before we get to my takes, The Source had a few thoughts he wanted to share from the Puerto Rico games. For new KUHearings subscribers, The Source is an anonymous insider who provided scary accurate pregame and postgame analysis for KU Hoops last year. He knows his stuff.

The Source’s Takes:

  • Arterio Morris should start at the two-spot early in the year as long as he earns Self’s trust. That trust must be earned during practice.

    • Elmarko is for real, however, and should be a serious competitor for the starting slot by the end of the year.

  • Kevin McCullar needs to play within himself. The Source doesn’t want McCullar to try to play like Jalen Wilson, which isn’t what makes him unique. He plays worse if he’s overthinking, and just needs to “let the game come to him.”

  • Hunter Dickinson is only gonna get better with time and comfort.

  • The key to KJ Adams’ success for KU will be his ability to get offensive rebounds and steal extra possessions.

  • Parker Braun looked “serviceable,” and that’s all KU will need from him.

  • The speed at which the team played at looked great.

Scoopmeister’s Takes:

1. Dajuan Harris Needs to Keep Shooting

Shooting is the big question surrounding this team after the Puerto Rico trip. Dajuan Harris shooting more threes is critical for the team to reach its ceiling this year. If the Jayhawks can space the floor, their offense should be absurdly efficient — which is where Harris’ aggressiveness comes into play.

Last year, the PG shot two threes or less in more than half of KU’s conference games. He also shot 40% from three, which you can’t expect him to match with a higher shooting volume. But that doesn’t matter.

If opposing defenses are forced to respect Harris on the perimeter, KU’s pick-and-roll action with Dickinson and Adams becomes nearly unstoppable.

An aggressive Harris might be the key ingredient to KU’s success this season, especially if he’s playing 35 minutes per game like he did in the third Puerto Rico matchup.

2. Someone’s Gotta Sacrifice

Almost every season, something like this happens for KU. The rotation looks stacked on paper with Harris, Arterio Morris, Elmarko Jackson, Nick Timberlake, Johnny Furphy, Kevin McCullar, KJ Adams, Hunter Dickinson (and Parker Braun).

While eight guys is a good number, the balance is a bit heavy in the guard department. Someone won’t get the minutes they’re expecting. I’ve got a hard time seeing Morris getting limited in the rotation due to his defense, which points to Jackson, Timberlake, or Johnny Furphy.

I’m not sure exactly who it’ll be, but how they handle it will be critical to KU’s chemistry this year. Hopefully, they’ll be mature enough to be ready for when the Jayhawks need them.

Speaking of Furphy… here’s another absurd dunk from the incoming freshman.

3. KU Looked Good

Both The Source and I agreed the Jayhawks were better than expected in Puerto Rico. Players seemed to know their roles, the ball movement was impressive, and their speed was surprising.

Simply: It’s set up to be a fun year…

The NIL Donation and Football Season Tickets Winner 👏

We officially donated $470 to Mass St. NIL thanks to 47 pre-orders of Rustin Dodd’s upcoming Patrick Mahomes book. Thanks to everyone who supported the former KU journalist AND athletes at KU.

Also, we officially have a winner for the KU football season tickets giveaway. Jeremy Huggans won the season tickets and has assured me they’ll be in the hands of KU fans (if not himself) for every home game this year.

I’m hoping to do some more giveaways like this soon!

Yup, This is Scoopsmafia 😂

This line in the Discord on Colorado being a culture fit for the Big 12 made me LOL.
