3 Quick Things for Kansas-Kentucky

Opening Line: Kansas favored by 5.5 points

Tuesday AM Line: Kansas favored by 7 points

1. Watch With Darnell Jackson 👏

You can chat with Kansas legend and 2008 National Champion Darnell Jackson during tonight’s Kansas-Kentucky game. He plans on joining us on the KUHearings Discord, which is like a modern message board with live chat and other fun features. We have more than 1,000 KU fans on there already.

Jackson just published his book “Behind The Smile,” which covers his remarkable life story through tragedies, triumphs, and lessons learned. Jackson aka “D-Block” was always one of my favorite Jayhawks and the heartbeat of the 2008 team.

I can’t wait to hang with him tonight and get my hands on this book.

2. The Source Returns 🙌

If you’re new to this newsletter, there is a legendary figure in the KUHearings World. He goes by “The Source” and his pre-game analysis last season was absurdly accurate 🔮.

Here are his takes on today’s Kansas-Kentucky game:

  • First, having three starters who have played in the Champions Classic before is a big advantage for Kansas. He expects the Jayhawks to build an early lead, while Kentucky should need more time to get comfortable.

  • He still thinks the betting line is cutting it a bit close. If Kentucky settles in, he thinks it could put some pressure on Kansas late.

  • The Source expects Kansas to play through Hunter Dickinson, which is no shocker. Beyond that, though, he thinks KU will run a lot of motion and cutting to create long possessions against a young Kentucky team.

  • Watch for Kentucky’s center Tre Mitchell to try and pop after setting screens rather than roll to the rim. There’s definitely some concern around pick-and-roll coverage for Kansas (which I included in my notes below). The Source and I think Kansas may dare Kentucky’s freshmen guards to shoot.

  • The Source thinks keeping role players like freshman Reed Sheppard from getting involved will be key for Kansas. Kentucky’s freshmen guards Rob Dillingham and Dajuan Wagner are gonna command attention… if a shooter like Sheppard gets going, it’ll cause some trouble for KU.

  • In all, The Source still loves KU to win outright tonight. And we’re happy to have him back with us.

3. Pick-and-Roll Defense

The Basketball Gods forced John Calipari and Kentucky into playing a little bit smaller with more spacing this year.

Due to injury and an ineligible player, the Wildcats are starting 6’9” senior Tre Mitchell and 6’8” freshman Justin Edwards down low. As a result, they’ve run an extremely effective pick-and-roll offense through their first two games. I expect them to try to put Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams in uncomfortable spots throughout the game.

The good news: Kansas has Dajuan Harris and Kevin McCullar to defend the point of attack.

Also good news: Kentucky has struggled from three so far this year. Per Synergy, the Wildcats are in the 99th% in unguarded catch-and-shoot opportunities so far this year. They rank in the 24th% in efficiency on those open looks.

I’d think Kansas goes under the screens early and forced Kentucky’s young guards to shoot. If the Wildcats make a couple of early ones, the Jayhawks will adjust and hit the screens harder.

  • United Airlines commented on KU’s Instagram that they’re prepping rims at the United Center tonight for KJ Adams’ arrival. There must be a Jayhawk on their social media team!

  • I’m taking Dajuan Harris to finish with more than 5.5 assists tonight on Underdog Fantasy. Ride with me using this link or the promo code “SCOOP.”
