Enough With the Sad Stuff

Kansas is going to beat Samford today. Here are three quick reasons why:

1) Kansas beats bad defensive teams

The Jayhawks thrive against teams who struggle defensively — and Samford isn’t a good defensive team.

The Bulldogs are No. 117 in defensive efficiency (or however Kenpom calculates defense).

  • Kansas is 10-1 against Kenpom teams outside the top 100 defensively. It wins those games by an average of 18.5 points.

  • Kansas is 11-9 against teams inside the top 100, with an average margin of 5.9 points in those games.

The Jayhawks are winning this game.

2) Kansas beats zone defenses (shout out KJ Adams)

Samford likes to drop into a zone after a 1-3-1 full-court press.

The Jayhawks are great against the zone. They’re the 13th most efficient offense in the country against zone defense.

KJ Adams is a nightmare for a zone defense. He moves well in space and will bring athleticism in attacking Samford hasn’t seen all season.

And a zone will give Kansas open looks. KU grades out as “excellent” on unguarded catch-and-shoot jumpers. Its No. 352 in the country on guarded looks (out of 362 teams). KU will get open looks off the press and/or zone.

The Jayhawks are winning this game.

3) Getting to the line and forcing turnovers

These are two things Kansas struggled with this season. This game is set up to help.

Samford fouls about as much as anyone in the country. And it ranks No. 256 in turnover rate. The high-pressure, hectic style backfires. And it’s going to backfire against an angry KU team.

Kansas is 11-1 this year when forcing 11 or more turnovers and attempting 18 or more free throws. It’s happening today.

The Jayhawks are winning this game.

My take is Bill Self — like all of us — should be given the opportunity to expand upon his earlier statements this week. At the same time, it doesn't mean what he initially said goes away.

Optics matter, especially in the transfer portal era. Click to see the full statement below ⬇️

6x Underdog Fantasy Squad Ride 🚗

We are back with my sponsor for the Underdog Squad ride. This play has a 6x payout! Here’s my reasoning:

  • This game will have a ton of possessions. Hunter Dickinson should eat on the glass.

  • I’m taking the Furphy points. He’s one of KU’s best transition scorers, which should help vs. the Samford press.

  • And Achor Achor is Samford’s starting center. He’s a stretch five… going against Dickinson. He shoots about two threes a game, but I’m thinking Samford lets it fly. Give me the Achor three.
