Anonymous CFB Coaches Talk KU

The KU football staff appears to be killing it on the recruiting trail right now, but this is a story we’ve heard before as KU fans. I asked around CFB coaching circles to find out how legitimate this recruiting run is.

For reference, both Rivals and 247Sports rank KU football recruiting in the top 40 for the class of 2024.

The following conversations took place off the record in exchange for honest opinions. The coaches include a Power Five coordinator and two assistants with ties to the state of Kansas. I'm keeping the coaches anonymous but passing along what I'm HEARING:

On KU Football recruiting:

  • “I’ve been impressed so far. They have been grinding it on the camp circuit more than any other Power Five program that I have seen this year. Every camp I attended there was a KU assistant in attendance, if not Lance Leipold himself.”

  • “They are organized and do a great job getting kids to visit, both unofficially & officially. Although they haven’t taken a bunch of guys from KC, going around to the schools this spring, you can tell the high school coaches have a positive outlook [on the program].”

  • “Saying they are beating out some of the blue-chip schools on kids wouldn’t be true. Most of those recruiting wins are on kids who no longer have commitable offers. But that being said they are still quality players.”

    • Scoopmeister’s Note: I’d love for recruiting sites to be more honest about what schools were actually recruiting a player when they commit.

  • “You combine how good the staff is there, with the culture they’re building, and the communication plan that [KU Recruiting Director] Greg Svarczkopf has put together… it’s a lethal combination.”

  • “They’ve done great in the portal and seem to be out ahead there”

  • “The recruiting there has picked up because recruits are getting smarter and smarter. And when recruits meet that staff, it’s easy to see that they’re a bunch of good people who are sincere and treat people the right way. That’s always going to be attractive to good prospects.”

On recruiting to the system:

  • “They have a plan, and they know what they’re looking for. I don’t see them as chasing stars. They are very specific with body types they recruit and they stay firm with that.”

  • “They know what they’re looking for in their system, and they’re not deviating from that. Those types of decisions I really respect.”

  • “They do a tremendous job recruiting ‘fit’”

  • “They have a specific recipe: transfer portal, play the long game with high school kids, and be involved locally.”

On recruiting now vs. the past:

  • “They’ve done a much better job than the previous staffs.”

  • “I’d say better than they’ve been in awhile.”

  • “It’s a huge improvement.”

  • “It’s different than Les Miles and Dave Beaty, where they’d go chase stars from down south.”

KU Hoops Loses Visitor to Texas

UCF grad transfer Ithiel Horton canceled his visit to Kansas this week, instead committing to Texas right after taking an official trip to Austin on Thursday morning.

I’d been Hearing the KU staff wanted Horton to join the team this season, as they’ve been looking for another guard who can shoot it from deep. Horton fit that mold as a 6’5” guard who averaged 12.3 points for UCF last season.

I still expect the Jayhawks to try and land a grad transfer to complete the roster. I’d stay on the lookout for an experienced perimeter player who can stretch the floor and eat up minutes.

As always, I’ll keep you posted. Please keep sharing the scoop!
