Melvin Council Commits to Kansas

Kansas landed a commitment from St. Bonaventure transfer Melvin Council Jr. on Wednesday. The Jayhawks secured Council’s commitment just days after his visit to Lawrence.

The long, athletic, 6’4” guard fits well for KU’s plans in building around Darryn Peterson and Flory Bidunga. Council brings elite defensive skills, with the ability to lock down opponents' best perimeter scorers. Offensively, he’s got enough speed to take pressure off Peterson by attacking the rim.

Council sounds like a Bill Self basketball player. He’s known to play with a lot of intensity in every game and practice. His signature phrase tells you what you need to know:

By The Numbers

According to analytics expert Evan Miya (evanmiya.com), Council grades as an B+ player with standout traits in playmaking, assists, and steals:

  • Played a full 40 minutes in 15 games

  • Defensive standout: 99th percentile in steals, 86th percentile in isolation defense

  • Playmaking: 92nd percentile in assist-to-turnover ratio

  • Rebounding: 84th percentile in defensive rebounding rate

  • Isolation scoring: 92nd percentile in points per possession

  • Shooting is the concern..

    • Shot 29.9% from three this year. The hope for KU is in the context:

      • Shot 20.2% from three when playing all 40 minutes

      • Shot 33% from three when not playing the entire game

        • Low-30%s feels like a reasonable target this year
