VIP Hearings: Hoops Redshirt, Injury Questions, and Zeke Mayo 🤫🤫
In today’s VIP Hearings:
I’m Hearing about a player who will likely redshirt… which makes me question if he’ll play another game for the Jayhawks.
Some (likely minor) health chatter for the hoops team.
One player who is often at less than 100%, and a Hearing on a possible minor medical procedure.
Why Zeke Mayo comes into play as well

Off the Record: Why David Coit Could Make a Difference for KU
Note: When KU added Rylan Griffen, I interviewed two sources familiar with his game (you can read the story here). At the bottom of the story, I asked if you wanted similar content for KU’s other new players — and 97.3% of you voted to keep the player breakdowns coming.
Your feedback directly drives the content in this newsletter. So onto the next one we go 🙂
I spoke to a national college hoops writer off the record about Diggy Coit. His thoughts on Coit’s game and why KU made the move are below.
First, I want to address something: His nickname is Diggy. It’s a great nickname. Diggy Coit!! Therefore, I will refer to him as Diggy from this point forward.
This interview has been edited to reflect the nickname proclamation mentioned above.
Q: Were you surprised to see Diggy land at Kansas?
Not at all. It was rumored that KU was trying to add another guard, and I personally like the move. You can never have enough ball handlers.
Last year, when Dajuan Harris (was off the court), Kansas couldn’t run anything and struggled in the half-court.
Now, with Shakeel Moore, Zeke Mayo, Harris, and Coit, you could have one of the best backcourts in the Big 12.
Q: Should KU fans be concerned to see them grab a player this late?
You can never add too much talent. How many 20ppg scorers were left in the portal? It’s a long season, and with a 20-game conference schedule, you never know when you will need your depth.
Scoopmeister’s note: The 20-game conference schedule is a great point.
Kansas has battled injuries in the past… I’d rather have Coit and not need him, than not have him and need him.
In two seasons at NIU, he scored 1,051 points and was a two-time All-MAC Third Team selection.
Kansas adding him at this point holds very little risk… but he could be the difference for a deep tournament run.
Q: What do you think KU fans should know about Coit’s game?
He’s more of a scorer than a natural playmaker. I could see him winning you a game where you’re in a pinch or a game on the road.
Typically, when transfers go up a level, their numbers get cut in half… so if he gives you close to 10 points per game, that’s a win.
Q: That’s definitely a win. But does he fit with the roster?
He should fit well next to Dajuan Harris, one of the country’s best facilitators.
Kansas is better when they have multiple guards than can score, especially from three-point range.
A lineup of Harris, Coit, AJ Storr/Rylan Griffen, KJ Adams, and Hunter Dickinson could be lethal if we see it for stretches.
Q: What do you think the ceiling is for Coit’s year at KU?
His ceiling would be around, or slightly above, 10-12 ppg while filling a role as a backup scoring guard. When Kansas has multiple scoring guards on the floor at the same time, they have been a top-10 team.
Q: What about the floor?
His floor could be an inefficient shot maker that comes in and provides a spark at home or on the road.
You need guys that are capable of having special nights — and he is capable.
There could be a slug fest game on the road where he comes in and wins you that game or plays a pivotal role in a Big 12 road victory.
That’s not a bad floor at all. Thank you to those who are willing to speak off the record to help inform KU fans!
