What CFB Coaches Think of KU’s New Offensive Coordinator

Lance Leipold and the Jayhawks have their new Offensive Coordinator. I spoke to one Division I OC and another long-time offensive assistant about KU’s hire.

Here’s what they had to say:

First: Former Baylor and BYU OC Jeff Grimes is headed to Lawrence, according to YahooSports. I’ve Heard Leipold called a team meeting this morning and delivered a strong message: “We’re keeping our offense.”

It’s worth starting with the question mark: Grimes was reportedly ‘dismissed' from the Baylor job after lackluster results this season. Grimes appears to have been a causality with defensive-minded coach Dave Aranda feeling pressure for a 3-9 campaign. I’m not too worried about it, though.

I’m Hearing really good things about the hire for Kansas. Grimes has twice been a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant in college football. At BYU, he helped turn QB Zach Wilson into the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft. Wilson’s NFL career is known for plays like this.

The Offensive Approach

Grimes is known for a wide-zone offensive scheme, the same foundational attack that Leipold and the Jayhawks run. KU is hiring a coach who can step right into the role without blinking.

I expect KU to keep its offense, core principles, and terminology from the last three years. Grimes will add his twist on the existing scheme. He’s known for more outside runs, which I could see working nicely for the Jayhawks.

I’d have to think this hire doesn’t hurt KU’s effort to keep Devin Neal in Lawrence for another year.

The approach is perfect for schools that may not have the biggest offensive linemen. Instead, they can use smaller, faster linemen to their advantage.

What CFB Coaches Are Saying

As I mentioned earlier, I texted a current Division I offensive coordinator and another long-time offensive assistant coach to get their thoughts.

  • “Great hire! He’s really good.”

  • “He’s a damn good coach.”

  • “The hire makes a ton of sense. Offense will look incredibly similar.”

  • “I’d imagine he’ll run KU’s offense.”

  • “He’ll add his flavor to it, probably more jet sweeps and lots of speed motion.”

  • “He loves pre-snap movement.”

  • “Go put on the 2020 BYU tape. It’s electric.”

Three Grimes Plays to Watch

I also wrote one national college football journalist, asking “Jeff Grimes good?”

His response:

“Very.”

2025 5-Star Visiting KU for the Mizzou Game 😯

The No. 6 overall player in the 2025 class Bryson Tiller is expected to visit KU this weekend, according to 247Sports.

KU will get to make a second impression on the 6’9” forward right away. 247Sports is also reporting he’s set a visit to Indiana, where he’ll watch the Hoosiers host the Jayhawks.
