The beginning of the end of Darryn Peterson’s recruitment kicked off today.
The No. 3 overall (but maybe the best) player in the 2025 class named his final 8 schools in an interview with college hoops reporter Jeff Goodman. You can watch the 14-minute interview here.
The finalists are Kansas, Kentucky, Kansas State, Ohio State, USC, Arizona State, Louisville, and Washington.
This is what I’m Hearing on the recruitment:
On where KU stands:
To start, I still think Kansas leads this recruitment.
As always, I have to hedge by saying high school recruiting predictions are a dangerous game.
My guess is that this commitment will be carefully planned from a media perspective. I’d have to think today’s interview with Goodman launched the commitment sequence.
I’d say maybe 4 of the final schools are worth watching here.
I’ve Heard great things about the Peterson family and camp. So I get it if you’re eye-rolling about a planned media campaign around a commitment — but I think it’s the smart move. I would do the same. They should be thoughtful about this.
Peterson has long been KU’s top target for the 2025 class.
The top PG in the class, Darius Acuff, committed to Arkansas on Friday.
I am working on a VIP-Only Hearings that will break down what happened with Acuff. It’s good stuff… and Peterson is involved, too. You can upgrade here to get the exclusive scoops.
I can’t wait to share it with you.
On Timing and Visits:
Following today’s announcement, Peterson’s father told On3 that Darryn plans on visiting all 8 finalists in August and September — with a commitment in November.
The November timeline comes with some mixed messaging.
Just 16 days ago, Peterson told Rivals his goal was to commit before his high school season starts.
Peterson’s high school season will likely start the first week of November. So, it’s possible he commits right around Nov. 1. But…
One month ago, Peterson’s dad told a different On3 reporter, ‘A decision is going to be sped up. Darryn wants to commit sooner rather than later, actually.’
Peterson was originally going to visit Ohio State the first week of August.
I’d Heard he was going to commit to a college shortly after that visit, but Peterson’s visit schedule recently changed.
He is now currently set to visit USC on Aug 1-3 and Ohio State on August 30.
I’m Hearing Peterson is considering playing his final year of high school hoops at Prolific Prep School in Napa.
I believe Peterson changed his college visit schedule so he could go see Prolific and USC on the same trip.
Prolific is one of the top Adidas brand Prep Schools in the country. It would be good news for KU if Peterson lands there.
My best guess is that Peterson visits Ohio State as planned on August 30 and we see a commitment in the week or two following the visit.

KU football season is almost here.
The Jayhawks officially started fall camp on Tuesday. It’s too early in camp for any Hearings of substance (trust me, I was still working the phones yesterday).
For now, here are three highlights to see:
1) The team seeing the renovated Anderson Family Football Complex is a must-watch.
Props to Lance Leipold who wanted to make sure the current players got to enjoy the new facilities. He prioritized getting Anderson done first, before the stadium renovation.
Brand new spaces for the guys in Anderson Family Football Complex 🔥📈
They earned it. Rock Chalk.

2) Here’s our first look at Jalon Daniels practicing with the team.

Jalon Daniels said he felt like his childhood self out there 'playing ball' again.
"Conditioning's hard, but at one point during the season I wished I was able to do conditioning. So I'm just taking that in."

3) The offensive line looks BIG, and it’s spectacular 😂 . Tweets like the two below have me feeling really optimistic. And hey, it’s July 31… why not be hopeful this time of year?

T Logan Brown (6-6 315, pic below)

Spread the word and pass this along to fellow Jayhawks.
🏀 Check out this list of the most wins against ranked opponents in college hoops since 2014. I’m Hearing Bill Self is, in fact, that dude.
🏈 We have WHEAT LIGHTS STANDING at David Booth Memorial Stadium.
🏀 Devonte Graham signed a non-guaranteed one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, according to The Oregonian.
🏀 Kansas women’s basketball landed a commitment from Libby Fandel, ESPN’s No. 41 player in the country. You can see her commitment post here.
VIP Hearings:
First, I’m working on a VIP-Only newsletter with behind-the-scenes Hearings on how the Darius Acuff recruitment played out. It’s good stuff, and I’m excited to share it with you.
I also have VIP Hearings coming on how things are progressing with Zeke Mayo, AJ Storr, Flory Bidunga, and Rakease Passmore.
One of those four has emerged recently as a standout in practice.
For now, here’s some insight on the top schools competing for KU to land Peterson
