Hearing: Furphy Stock is Trending Up 😯
I’m Hearing Johnny Furphy has looked more comfortable and confident lately behind the scenes for the Jayhawks. As a result, I think we start to see a slight increase in Furphy minutes coming up.*
**I say slight increase in minutes because I don’t think we’ll see any drastic rotation changes from the Jayhawks without something unexpected happening.
There have been clear signs of Furphy earning the trust of his coaches, which further confirms what I’ve Heard. The most clear was KU playing the freshman wing for most of the last three minutes in its two-point win vs. TCU.
I thought this tweet from the excellent Michael Swain at 247Sports summarized it well. These are the kinds of things that earn trust.
He's doing things he wasn't doing a month ago. He's challenging shots at the rim without fouling, rebounding and attacking the rim on offense.
It doesn't always have to be about end product. He's doing the right things right now.

The analytics don’t look so bad, either. Furphy rates as one of KU’s most efficient offensive players in ‘Points Per Possession’ via analytics tool Synergy Sports. His grade is ‘excellent’ when a possession ends with him (shooting, turnover, etc). The only players with higher marks are Hunter Dickinson and Parker Braun (Braun’s sample size is really small).
Of course, there are several ways to grade efficiency… and Furphy needs more opportunities to better analyze his value. It’s also worth noting Elmarko Jackson and Jamari McDowell grade out better defensively, and you know enough about Bill Self to understand why that matters.
Still, I’ve Heard KU wants to get the freshman wing more minutes. Even so, it’ll really depend on matchups more than anything else. Furphy has struggled against faster, more athletic teams where he’s gotten sped up. The game needs to keep slowing down for him.
You can see small signs that it’s happening. If he can keep earning trust, I think we’ll see more Furphy.
*Scoopmeister’s Note: If Furphy comes in and gets beat on defense or turns it over early in the next few games, maybe forget I wrote this 😂

Big KU Football Recruiting News
1) The Jayhawks landed a transfer portal commitment from center Shane Bumgardner today. The big man won the Rimington Trophy for the best center in DII last season.
Center is a key position to fill for the Jayhawks. They need to replace veteran Mike Novitsky. It’s unclear if Bumgardner should be a starter or if he’ll provide much-needed depth to the line. He picked KU over Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, Bowling Green, and other smaller schools.

2) The No. 3 offensive tackle in the 2025 class is taking an official visit to Kansas this weekend, according to 247Sports. The local star prospect, Andrew Babalola, goes to Blue Valley Northwest High School.
While Babalola recently picked up offers from Penn State, Florida State, and Oklahoma, I’ve Heard his interest in KU is legitimate.
We’ve got a long way to go on this one, but it’ll be fun to watch. I’ll keep you posted.
