Two Portal Targets to Watch

I sent this text to VIP subscribers with Hearings about KU out of the NBA Draft combine.

You can upgrade here to get KU Scoops texts and developing Hearings in real-time — including new info at the bottom of today’s newsletter.

  • I’m Hearing there’s mutual interest between KU and BYU transfer Jaxson Robinson. He’d be a big-time get for any program.

    • Robinson is currently going through the NBA Draft process and is at the combine. His wingspan measurements look.. good.

      • Bill Self is also at the combine this week… just sayin'.

      • Robinson’s former BYU coach Mark Pope is recruiting him to Kentucky as well.

    • I’ll share more Hearings on KU and Robinson at the bottom of today’s email in VIP..

  • Robinson is a 6’7” wing who averaged 14 points per game and scored 18 against KU in BYU’s win at Allen Fieldhouse.

    • Robinson is known as a perimeter shooter and would be another player with length who could help KU stretch the floor.

  • KU is in the game here, but there’s at least one big hurdle I’m still watching for with this one…

  • I also continue to Hear KU is targeting Rice transfer Noah Shelby as a developmental piece to bring on board. Shelby would likely redshirt this season… and I’m not sure if he’d be a scholarship or walk-on player (The Jayhawks still have two open scholarship spots..

    • Shelby was a four-star PG in high school and visited KU before ultimately choosing Vanderbilt. He got out of a mess at Vandy, but still didn’t do much for Rice, either.

      • TL;DR: Shelby’s had bad luck so far in college.

    • Both Shelby and Rylan Griffen are from the Dallas area, and I’ve Heard there’s enough familiarity there for it to help KU.

    • He’d be a great walk-on addition if the Jayhawks can pull it off.

Johnny Furphy at NBA Draft Combine

I’d Heard Johnny Furphy was truly undecided about his future entering the NBA Draft combine. I was told shooting drills would be the most important part of his week.

It looks like Furphy has done enough to stay in the Draft and then some, based on early chatter this week.

At this point, I’m just cheering for him to go as high as possible in the Draft. Any surprise return would be fun, but I don’t think it’s worth anyone getting their hopes.

🏀 Kansas added Wichita high schooler Will Thengvall on Tuesday as a walk-on. You can see his announcement post here. Thengvall was 5A State Player of the Year.

🏀 🏈 An analysis showed Kansas Athletics is in the best financial position across the Big 12.

🏀 Kevin McCullar said he underwent a knee scope procedure this offseason, according to 247Sports.
