VIP Hearings: State of KU Hoops
In the 24 hours following one of the most deflating losses in the Bill Self era, Iām Hearing the Kansas basketball team has had multiple direct, soul-searching conversations.
I expect the results of these meetings to largely inform how the Jayhawks approach the first of their final 12 games remaining.
KU, it seems, is trying to draw a line: You're either in or you're out.
This is what Iām Hearing:
An Expected Change
I think KU is likely moving away from playing wings at the 4-spot.
KU hopes KJ Adams will return Saturday vs. Baylor.
When KJ is back, I expect KU to run a three-big rotation of Adams, Hunter Dickinson, and Flory Bidunga.
I donāt think any wing made a compelling case to get those minutes at the 4.
And thatās where KU will start to trim its rotation.
AJ Storr and Self Hearings
There continues to be an push-and-pull dynamic between Storr and the staff:
I think Self has felt pressured to make things work with AJ Storr ā largely due to how much Storr is getting paid.
Money isnāt the only reason: Storrās talent-level raises KUās ceiling.
Still, Storr has gotten a longer grace period than weāre used to seeing when a player struggles defensively.
Storrās buy-in remains a question mark, based on my understanding.
I think Storrās window is shrinking, especially with Adams returning soon.
But Iāve thought that before, and heās been the first player off the bench since Adams hurt his shoulder.
And long-termā¦.
