What I’m Hearing: Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar

I’m Hearing Hunter Dickinson isn’t expected to play in the Big 12 Tournament after dislocating his shoulder Saturday vs. Houston. I haven’t Heard much on Dickinson’s status for the NCAA Tournament, as I don’t think it’s clear yet.

Of course, KU and Dickinson are gonna do everything they can to try and play in the Tournament. I believe there’s still some hope Dickinson could make it back next week, but I’m honestly not sure yet. Dickinson ran off the court after hurting his shoulder with 11 minutes left in the Houston game. You can watch the play here.

While I haven’t Heard this directly, I’d also be surprised if Kevin McCullar plays in the Big 12 Tournament week. McCullar has been battling a bone bruise that takes time to get to 100%.

If the Jayhawks want to maximize their odds of having a healthy team for the NCAA Tournament, resting McCullar makes the most sense.

As always, I’ll keep you posted as soon as I Hear more. Updates will continue to immediately go out via the VIP Scoops Texts.

Jayhawks to Play in $2M + Vegas NIL Tournament?

I’ve Heard for a long time Kansas was talking about playing in a non-conference Vegas Tournament early next season. I was never able to match it with an existing set of games that made sense… until news of the ‘Players Era Tournament’ broke.

I’m expecting the Jayhawks to play in the inaugural Vegas event, featuring eight teams in ‘24 before doubling to 16 the following year. Each school will supposedly receive $1M in NIL money for participating, with the winner taking home an additional $1M.

According to Front Office Sports, Alabama, Duke, FAU, Houston, Oregon, San Diego State, St. John’s, Syracuse, and Virginia are among the other teams in discussions to play.

This is a no brainer if KU — and the Tournament organizers — can pull it off.

Jayhawks Making Changes

I wanted to share this quick follow-up from the March 4 Hearings Newsletter about KU’s out-of-bounds defensive struggles. Here’s what I wrote about the issue:

The Jayhawks are one of the worst teams in the country at defending out-of-bounds plays. They rank No. 330 out of 362 schools on out-of-bounds defense, per Synergy Sports.

To me, the issue represents certain issues with the team that aren’t easily spotted: Struggling with scouting reports, missing assignments, and blowing rotations. All of these collectively contribute to defensive lapses.

The Jayhawks made a change quickly after the newsletter went out. Check out KU trapping off baseline out-of-bounds passes and playing a quick zone on those possessions. You can clearly see it early in KU’s win against KState below.

The Hearings knows ball. It’s cool to see these changes in such close proximity to the newsletter
