KU’s Prior List of HC Candidates 😯

The bye week was a perfect time to scoop around on who else Travis Goff interviewed for the KU football job two years ago. The list of candidates KU spoke with is really impressive in retrospect. It’s full of breakout stars and proven winners across the board.

Here’s are the names I’ve Heard:

Duke HC Mike Elko (was Texas A&M DC at time of interview)

  • Elko has led Duke to a Leipold-esque turnaround in just two seasons. The Blue Devils went 9-4 last year and are currently ranked No. 20.

  • Elko wasn’t a big name when Goff interviewed him, but that’s not the case anymore. I’ve Heard Elko and Goff really hit it off in their interview, too. He was a real contender in the job search.

Oregon HC Dan Lanning (was Georgia DC at time of interview)

  • Lanning is a breakout star in his second year at Oregon. The 37-year-old Kansas City native interviewed for the KU job while he was at Georgia, though I’m not sure if he would’ve taken it.

  • Lanning’s involvement shows the depth of quality candidates in this search.

Colorado OC Sean Lewis (was Kent State HC)

  • Lewis is considered one of the top up-and-comers in college football. He left the head coaching job at Kent State to run Deion Sander’s offense at Colorado. I expect him to get another solid head coaching gig soon. At the very least, his name will be mentioned in a lot of coaching searches this offseason.

Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman (was Notre Dame DC)

  • This may be a shocker to a lot of you. I’ve Heard Goff interviewed Freeman at some point in this process. He’s now the head man for the Irish, and they’re recruiting with the best in college football.

Army HC Jeff Monken

  • We know this one. The Army HC was the runner-up for the Kansas job. He went 6-6 last year with a win over Navy. He’s changed his offense away from the triple-option this season, and they’ve struggled, as expected. Army is 2-5 with a more favorable schedule ahead.

Tulane HC Willie Fritz

  • The Kansas native has coached Tulane to a top-25 ranking for a second-straight year. The Green Wave beat USC in a bowl game last season to finish 12-2. Fritz is a stud. There’s nothing more to say.

Eastern Michigan HC Chris Creighton

  • Creighton gets credit for continuing to build a respectable program at one of the hardest jobs in the country. Eastern Michigan went 9-4 last season, and Creighton’s name often gets thrown around head coaching searches.

This all just shows Goff was “on it” regarding who he interviewed. These are all well-respected names and proven high-caliber coaches, respective to their roles.

Jalon Daniels Update 🤞

I’m Hearing Jalon Daniels had a good week of football-related activities last week, but I’m still not sure if he’s going to be ready for Saturday vs. OU.

As of right now, I’d guess it’s 60/40 that Daniels doesn’t play. If he does start, it’s going to be a secret until late in the week. I’ll do my best to keep you posted.

Leipold called him doubtful during his Monday press conference.

Mike’s Quick Links 🔗

  • The Could Be Wrong show is all over the Oklahoma game. It’s KU’s best chance to make a statement for the program and the conference. You can listen on Apple, Spotify, and watch on YouTube.

  • Kenny Logan is pissed The Booth isn’t sold out yet for Oklahoma.

  • Hunter Dickinson is talking trash already.
