Quick Riley Kugel Takes

Kansas landed its first portal commitment of the offseason in Florida wing Riley Kugel.

The 6’5” transfer didn’t have the kind of stats at Florida that make you start trash-talking your friends, but his numbers are misleading.

Kugel has NBA potential, and you can’t turn that down.

  • Yeah, I said NBA potential. I’ve Heard multiple sources independently suggest he has an NBA ceiling.

    • Kugel was preseason all-SEC entering this season. He averaged 17.3 points in his last 10 games as a freshman.

    • Kugel struggled early this season and Florida, moved him to a bench role. He scored double-digits just twice in his last 11 games (more on this below).

    • He still had plenty of moments, scoring 25 against Baylor, 24 against Wake Forest, 22 against Auburn, and 20 against Arkansas this year.

  • In my second portal update, I said KU wants to add shooting, scoring, athleticism, and depth.

    • Kugel adds shooting and athleticism.

    • This addition is a direct response to KU’s struggles this season.

  • Kugel’s three-point shooting numbers are deceptive. He’s a better shooter than you’d think after scanning his ESPN stats page.

    • Kugel shot 37.6% from three his freshman year and 31.2% his sophomore year. The sophomore slump was due to the non-conference cold streak. He ended up shooting 39.6% in the SEC this year.

    • He’s a career 40.2% three-point shooter against SEC competition.

  • As I mentioned, things went sideways for Kugel as a sophomore. He lost his starting role. The Associated Press wrote that he was ‘looking lost on the court and disengaged on the bench.’

    • He bounced back after this article with a few big games, but never consistently got it going.

    • Kugel’s mindset is definitely a question mark. Maybe it’s the kind of player Bill Self was looking for.

  • Kugel grew up in the KC area for part of his childhood. He wanted to be at KU.

    • He also played in high school with Ernest Udeh. There was familiarity with the staff.

      • Look at the pics of him in KU gear in his commitment tweet 👇

  • The Jayhawks are making corrections from last season with this one. They’re locking up Kugel and hopefully another player soon (see the VIP Scoops below).

    • Landing quality players quickly allows KU to take some risks and pursue the best players available.

    • I’ve said all along, they’re going after the best players.

  • The ceiling is high with Kugel. Given the right coaching staff and opportunity, he can turn into an all-conference player.

    • It’s a high-risk, high-reward play for Kansas.

      • Ultimately, he fills a need for the team and has Power Five experience.

      • And the Jayhawks have more reinforcements coming. 👀

In VIP Hearings Below:

There are two major developments I’m Hearing about.

More commit predictions are coming

  1. There’s real momentum picking up with KU and another Portal target.

  2. I’m Hearing about a surprising return for a KU player I’d been expecting to transfer out 👀.

  3. A new player to keep an eye on.

I’m thinking we see recruiting visits/trips taking place this week… and I’m hoping to hit another KU commitment prediction soon.
