Why this was Bill Self’s First Real Ejection 😲

One of my favorite Bill Self facts was that he’d never been ejected from a game at Kansas, which seems… almost impossible. So, Self made history in some ways after he got tossed during the miserable Texas Tech game.

I went back and found the Oklahoman article from Self’s first ejection. It turns out he got booted in 1999 for leaving the coaching box to ask why he got a technical. The story says:

A fiery competitor through hundreds of basketball games as a player at Edmond High and Oklahoma State and a coach at Oral Roberts and Tulsa, Bill Self had never been ejected from a basketball game.

That streak ended last Thursday night at Wyoming.

When Self left the designated coaching box to inquire why official Scott Thornely had given him a technical, Thornely added a second one. That brought an automatic ejection, sending Self to the TU locker room for the final 10:47 of the game.

So, technically, this was the first time Self was ever tossed from a game for something he said to a ref.

And that’s just about the only thing I’m gonna write from the Texas Tech game. Here’s what Self said after the game 👇

  • Vegas set its lines on Big 12 win totals for next season. The Jayhawks have come a long, long way.

  • It’s not just KU. Top-10 college basketball teams are losing at an unprecedented mark on the road this year.

  • A new Could Be Wrong podcast episode is live. We recorded after the Texas Tech game and discussed if the Jayhawks can win a National Title, the Elmarko/Timberlake situation, and well… we vented.
