Bill Self Update 🐐

No portal update can come without the latest on Bill Self’s future at Kansas.

Self said he wasn’t sure about his future, and he needed to talk things over with his family after the St. John’s loss. He also said he loves coaching, but he needs to feel good enough to do it well.

The next day, I wrote that no final decision had been made, but I was Hearing that he was leaning toward retiring. While I stand by what I said at the time (it was what I was Hearing) the signals have shifted.

The signals have shifted.

• There is still no final decision, but I’m Hearing there’s a real chance Self returns

  • I’d say it’s more likely than not he’s back, but I really want to stress that I’m not certain. We will know when Self is ready either way

• There's been active recruiting work and NIL discussions with Self and the staff about next season

• These sound like the actions of someone seriously considering coaching next year, and making sure he has the pieces in place to win at the level he expects

• At the same time, I believe KU was gearing up and is prepared for a coaching search.

• Nothing is certain yet. These are just the indicators one week after the season ended

• I'm Hearing KU remains in a good spot with 2026’s No. 1 recruit

• Kansas & Kentucky are considered the favorites for the 6'7" forward

• We should have a decision in the next week or two

  • I’ve liked KU’s spot since November, but this is an impossible one to predict. If Self returns, I’ll feel good about KU’s chances
