Anonymous NBA Scout on Darryn Peterson

I spoke to an NBA Scout who shared his perspective on Darryn Peterson’s game. Thank you to the Scout for taking time out of his day for KU fans! I’ve summarized his insights in the bullet points below.

The Jayhawks got their guy.

2025’s No. 3 overall recruit, Darryn Peterson, committed to Bill Self and the Jayhawks over Ohio State, USC, and Kansas State.

The 6’5ā€ combo guard has long been KU’s top target for 2025. I first mentioned KU leading for Peterson as far back as a January 2024 newsletter. In July, I started Hearing KU’s staff prioritized Peterson over fellow 5-star guard Darius Acuff. I shared the following with VIP subscribers:

I’ve been Hearing Acuff and Peterson aren’t likely to end up at the same school. Both players want the ball in their hands.

The Acuff to Arkansas smoke started picking up in mid-June… right around the time Peterson was taking his visit to Kansas.

I don’t think this is a coincidence.

It seems like Acuff will land at Arkansas.

And I think KU lands Peterson.

Correct Scoop from a July 2024 VIP Hearings

Of course, recruiting isn’t as simple as taking one dude over the other. KU has to consider the returning roster, system fit, and even next year’s Portal.

But KU’s preference makes a lot of sense after Hearing the NBA Scout’s breakdown of Peterson’s game.

The following is a summary of the Scout’s analysis on Peterson:

  • Peterson is one of the ā€˜savviest guards’, with a unique blend of functional athleticism, ball skills, and shot-making ability.

    • He doesn’t have crazy athleticism, but he’s a good athlete. About a 7.5/10.

  • Peterson has really progressed as a perimeter shooter in the last couple of years. He’s off to a strong start shooting this year.

    • The Scout is seeing Peterson come off ball screens and shooting from three more confidently.

    • Peterson has always had a ā€˜knack for finding the midrange’ and has always been an ā€˜excellent foul shooter.’

      • His shooting structure looks good, with ā€˜no flaws’ in his motion.

  • While Peterson is a scorer, he’s a good passer who can make plays for his teammates.

    • The Scout said Peterson isn’t ā€˜a creator’ but rather someone who makes high-level plays with his passing.

  • Defensively he is ā€˜almost as good as he is offensively.’

    • Peterson ā€˜understands his assignment and takes pride in guarding other high-level players.’

      •  Scoopsmeister’s Note: I think defense and mentality is a big reason why KU’s staff made him their top priority.

  • Peterson has ā€˜ridiculous length’ for a guard.

    • He loves getting in the passing lanes and has really good hands, making life difficult for opposing guards.

  • The Scout is ā€˜really excited’ to see Peterson play in a legit defensive system.

Check out these highlights from Peterson’s first game this season.

Three stats from KU’s 87-57 season opener vs. Howard šŸ€

1) 45 Bench Points šŸ™Œ

KU fans, your team has depth this year.

In fact, the bench outscored KU’s starting five against Howard. It’s a welcome change after last season’s group ranked No. 310 in bench minutes played.

Zeke Mayo led the team with 19 points (5/8 from three) off the bench, and Flory Bidunga scored 13 points on 6/6 shooting.

2) Zeke’s 79 eFG%

Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) is a shooting percentage that adjusts for the added value of three-point shots.

Mayo’s 7/12 shooting performance with five threes gave him an eFG% of 79%.

For context, an average of 79 eFG% would’ve led the NCAA last season. Last year’s leader shot 72.5% per game.

It was only one game, but it’s fun to see Mayo get off to a great start at home.

3) Four Flory Dunks

We want all of the Bidunga dunks. I’ve Heard he can get up over 12 feet when jumping.

He was great against Howard. Watch his highlights below.

šŸˆ The Jayhawks landed a big commitment from South Carolina transfer Bangally Kamara. I’ll have more on why this is a promising get in a football newsletter later this week. For now, check out these two highlights here.

šŸ€ Watch this short breakdown on Gradey Dick’s NBA breakout. In his last 4 games, Dick has scored: 30 pts, 31 pts, 22 pts, and 26 pts.
