I'm Hearing Bill Self is leaning toward retiring and not returning to Kansas next season, though a final decision has NOT been made.
These Hearings are early are coming off a painful loss less than 24 hours ago. Emphasis on early.
But people I trust would be surprised if Self is coaching the Jayhawks next season.
What Self said Sunday
Self's postgame Sunday was more revealing than I expected:
He said he hasn’t decided, and he’ll go home to talk with his family about his future: “I’ve had some issues off the court health-wise, and that’ll be discussed.”
When asked if he’s completely healthy, Self said: “I don’t know about completely, but I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time.”
Self sounded like a coach thinking about returning and talked about improving their evaluation and recruiting.
Self used to think about his career in five-year increments. Now it's two.
“I'll go back now and break it down and see where that leads.”
That last line got my attention. In February 2025 — over a year ago — I wrote in a KUHearings newsletter: "We're working in a five-year timeline, and it's probably closer to one more year than it is five."
At that time, I viewed this current season as the second of a two-year run. Self has dealt with three cardiac scares since 2023, including two rounds of stents and an AFib episode in January.
There were stretches this season where people around the program thought he'd be back. He was having fun coaching. I think we could all see that.
But for now, with no final decision made, the signals on my end remain consistent.
I think this sentence said a lot:
“I love what I do,” Self said. “I want to feel good while I'm doing it, though.”

🏀 🎙️The Could Be Wrong podcast was live last night, talking about KU and Self’s future. I joined the show around the 38-minute mark after getting back from the game, which I unfortunately decided to attend.
