Three 5-Stars to Watch for 2025

I asked VIP subscribers what Hearing they wanted next at the end of the last newsletter. KU’s rebrand details led the way, with 2025 recruiting chatter following closely behind.

The rebrand is a bit tricky. I’d like to clarify some nuance/details after talking to some people over the weekend. I’ll keep working on it and share it soon.

For now, there are major developments with KU’s 2025 recruiting targets to discuss.

Here’s the latest:

Darius Acuff | No. 1 PG | No. 8 Overall (On3 Rankings)

• I’ve been Hearing chatter that Arkansas has momentum with Acuff for a month or so, and college basketball scooper “Trilly Donovan” confirmed that belief on his paid Discord Sunday.

  • This is gonna sound weird, but I think this is good news for KU. I’ll explain in VIP below.

• The Jayhawks had been all over Acuff and were considered the leader this spring.

  • Kentucky had been recruiting him, but the coaching carousel opened the door for Kansas.

  • I’ve Heard this recruitment will ultimately come down to whoever has the most promising NIL for him.

• John Calipari and the Razorbacks are in the lead for Acuff.

  • Cal got settled in at Arkansas in June and re-prioritized Acuff.

Darryn Peterson | No. 1 SG | No. 3 Overall (On3)

• Peterson has long been the Jayhawks’ top target for 2025.

  • He visited KU on June 23, and his only other visit scheduled is with his hometown school, Ohio State.

    • I’ve Heard Petersons visit to KU went great. He was engaged, asking detailed questions, and got along well with the team.

• While KU made a serious push for Acuff, Peterson has always been KU’s No. 1 option.

  • James Harden watched Peterson play in Italy. Check out his highlights from that game.

• On3 recently reported that Peterson is setting up a visit to Kentucky. You can read the story here. (His dad gave some great quotes about KU in there).

  • Peterson’s dad also says they want to commit sooner rather than later. I’m not so sure they end up visiting Kentucky.

  • The Ohio State visit is scheduled for August 1.

  • I think we could be getting a decision in August after he visits Ohio State.

  • I’ll share my best guess on this one in VIP as well.

Chris Cenac | No. 3 Forward | No. 6 overall (On3)

• Cenac is one of the hottest recruits in the country this summer. The 6’10” big man recently earned MVP honors at the NBAPA Top 100 camp.

  • You can watch his highlights from the camp here.

• I’m Hearing KU is making a big push here.

  • Cenac is a skilled forward, who fits nicely next to a pure center like Flory Bidunga.

  • Kansas has a good pitch. It has playing time at the four next to Bidunga — and at the five when Flory is off the court.

• The Jayhawks will have to fight off LSU, as Cenac has ties to the area. Houston has also been involved here — and just about every school in the country after Cenac’s breakout summer.

• I think he’s gonna be a player to watch closely. KU is making a real push here.

Other Notable Players to Watch:

• Bryson Tiller: A five-star forward who made a secret visit to KU earlier this summer. KU’s push for Cenac makes me think he’s trending the wrong way for the Jayhawks right now.

• Isaiah Denis: A four-star PG who picked up a KU offer in June. Let’s see if he schedules a visit to Lawrence. This could be a good fit if KU lands two five stars.

• Mazi Mosley: The four-star guard is reportedly Magic Johnson’s nephew. He picked up an offer from Kansas on July 2 after Townsend watched in person.

Acuff, Peterson, Cenac Predictions

KU has a shot to pull off a monster recruiting class here. This is what I think happens…
